About Our Work

Mission

Every day, about 2955 children are born in Ghana, each with 2 copies of the HBB gene, one inherited from each parent. These genes encode the two Beta haemoglobin chains that the child will live with. Each inherited HBB gene may be normal or mutated, encoding either a normal or defective haemoglobin chain. Our mission is to ensure that there is at least one less mutated HBB gene in the pool of 5910 genes inherited daily in Ghana. To achieve this we first have to make every carrier of the mutated gene know that they carry the mutation and consequently make them understand the amount of control they have on handing down the mutation to their offspring.

Vision

We ultimately seek to see the Ghanaian genome void of any kind of mutated HBB gene.

We envision Ghana rid of Sickle Cell Disease and the burden it puts on the Ghanaian healthcare system.

Goals & Strategies

Realizing our mission and vision involves answering our three mission questions:

  • How do we make people know about Sickle Cell Disease and how it comes about?
  • How do we help people know if they are carriers of the mutated gene?
  • How do we make carriers of the mutated gene understand the influence they have on the possibility of passing it on to their children?

We are here to:

  1. Raise the awareness on Sickle Cell Disease and its inheritance pattern through year-round, youth-focused educational talks and street marches, art and social media.
  2. Screen as many as we can for the mutated HBB gene, either for free or at a highly subsidized and affordable fee.
  3. Counsel carriers on the power they wield on eliminating the disease.
